Components of a Battery Storage System

A battery storage system comprises several key components. These being:

Battery Bank – Required to store the energy
Battery Charger – Manages charging of the batteries
Battery Inverter – Uses energy in the batteries to generate electricity for the household
System Controller – Turns on the Battery Charger and Inverter as required.

Understanding Energy Flows

Calculating the financial benefit of a battery storage system requires an understanding of all the energy flows. These include:

Used Directly : Solar System output used immediately by the household
To Battery : Solar System output used to charge the Battery Bank
From Battery : Energy recovered from the battery bank for use by the household
Alternative Source†: Supplies household when Battery Bank is empty
