Lessons from the Victorian Smart Meter Rollout 

One of the most notable lessons from the Victorian smart meter rollout out was the importance of ensuring customers could benefit from their new smart meter.

The Benefit most consumers want is lower electricity bills

A review of the Victorian rollout identified barriers limiting consumer access to smart meter benefits. These barriers are summarised as:

Lower Barriers

• Consumers are given simple access to their smart meter data

• Consumers can to use their smart meter data to determine “What’s in it for them?”

• Consumers are given the freedom to make informed choices



As the next Australian rollout of smart meters commences this article considers if the Australian Energy Market Commission has learnt and applied these lessons.
